Compatibility

  • Will the Halo SL work on my hard hat?

The Halo SL is designed to work on the majority of hard hats sold today. The following is a list of the hard hat makes and models that we have confirmed work with the Halos. We are continually adding to this list. If the hard hat you use is not listed, it will still likely work. If ever in doubt, please contact us at sales@illumagear.com and we will confirm.

  • Is the Halo SL only for construction workers?

The Halo SL is designed to benefit anyone who wears a hard hat and works in high-risk, low-light environments. The Halo SL is used by personnel in a number of work environments including construction, utilities, rail, broadband, mining, maintenance, warehouse, and many more.

  • Does the Halo SL work on other construction hats like bump caps or soft caps?

The Halo SL is designed to work on hard shell hard hats. The Halo SL has not been designed to work on soft caps.

  • Does the Halo SL work on cycling helmets?

The Halo SL has not been designed for cyclists or cycling helmets. It fits only a few of the many different kinds of cycling helmets available on the market.

  • Does the Halo SL work on any other helmets besides construction hard hats?

The Halo SL is designed to work on the majority of hard hats sold today. It does happen to fit on many climbing/spelunking helmets, as well as a few cycling and kayaking helmets.

  • Can I still wear my cap style hard hat backwards?

Yes, the Halo SL is designed to work on the majority of hard hats whether worn forwards or backwards.

  • Can I wear my clip-on earmuffs/face shield while using the Halo SL?

It will depend on how your earmuffs or face shield connect to your hard hat. There are some types of clip-on hard hat accessories including earmuffs and face shields that are not compatible with the Halo SL.

Functionality

  • Does the Halo SL have a front and back?

Yes. The mode buttons are at the front top center of the Halo SL and the battery compartment is in the back.

  • Will the Halo SL work in rain or snow?

Yes. The Halo SL is designed to operate in all weather conditions.

  • Does the Halo SL come with different LED light colors?

Yes. The Halo SL is available in three versions – standard all-white or the “brake-light” version with red or amber LEDs in the rear 1/4 of the Halo.

  • Do people experience any glare using the Halo SL while wearing safety glasses or regular glasses?

Not that we’ve experienced and no more than using any other personal head-mounted light.

  • Is the Halo SL too blinding for others in close proximity?

It depends on the circumstances. In some cases, nearby workers also benefit from the amount of light produced by the Halo SL. In other cases, you may wish to switch to Dim mode when working with or speaking to others.

One advantage the Halo SL offers over headlamps is that its 360-degree illumination allows other people’s eyes to gradually adjust as they approach the wearer, rather than being blinded when the wearer turns suddenly.

Specifications

  • How durable is the Halo SL?

The Halo SL has been designed to survive in tough environments. It has an Ingress Protection Rating of IP67 when the battery door is sealed shut, meaning it keeps out all dirt, dust, mud, pressurized water spray, and submersion in water up to 1m deep for 30 minutes. Check out our durability tests on the ILLUMAGEAR YouTube channel.

  • How heavy is the Halo SL?

The Halo SL weighs approximately 10 oz.

  • Will the Halo SL work in cold weather?

Yes. The Halo SL is designed to operate most effectively where the temperature ranges from 0°C (32°F) to 50°C (122°F). Storing or operating the product outside of this temperature may shorten the life of the battery. Storing or operating the Halo SL outside the temperature range of -20°C (-4°F) and 60°C (140°F) may damage the product. Lithium-Ion battery life is typically shortened in cold temperatures.

  • Is the Halo SL intrinsically safe / explosion proof?

No. While the Halo SL is a low voltage device, it does not meet Intrinsic Safe (IS) protection standards. ILLUMAGEAR plans to introduce an IS version of the Halo in the future.

  • How long will the LED lights last?

The LEDs in the Halo SL have an expected life of 36,000 hours.

  • Is the Halo SL ANSI and/or OSHA approved?

The Halo SL is a Personal Active Safety System™. ANSI A10.47 describes Personal Active Safety Systems as a source of illumination that can be used to enhance worker visibility (Section 14.2, “Illumination Levels”). The standard also states that personal active safety devices are a method of providing additional protection for flaggers (Section 5.2.2, “Flagger Safety”).

The Halo SL was specifically designed not to invalidate the ANSI rating of a hard hat. ANSI Z89.1 states that nothing may pierce or permanently affix to the hard hat. Our unique patented tension spring mount system was designed to hold onto the hard hat without invalidating this rating. In regards to OSHA, there is no current code that defines lighting requirements in the manner delivered by the Halo SL. According to OSHA standard 1926.56, there are minimum illumination intensities in foot-candles for US job sites. The light emitted by the Halo SL exceeds all minimum requirements as defined by OSHA for any type of construction work.

  • Is the Halo SL safe in high-voltage environments?

The Halo SL is not designed to provide high voltage protection, however, if used with a Class E or Class G hard hat, the Halo SL does not affect the protection provided by the hard hat and is safe to use.

  • What is the dielectric strength of the Halo SL?

The Halo is certified by a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory as having passed the tests verifying a dielectric strength of at least 30,000V.

  • Is the Halo SL compliant with Flame Resistance ratings for arc flash?

Since the Halo SL is mounted on a hard hat, that hard hat needs to meet ANSI standard Z89.1 Per ANSI guideline 1910.269(I)(8)(v)(C): “Arc-rated protection is not necessary for the employee’s head when the employee is wearing head protection meeting 1910.135 if the estimated incident energy is less than 9 cal/cm2 for exposures involving single-phase arcs in open air or 5 cal/cm2 for other exposures.” Guideline 1910.135 refers directly to ANSI Z89.1.

The dielectric strength of the Halo is over 30,000V.

Maintenance

  • Can I run the Halo SL under a faucet to clean it?

We recommend cleaning the Halo SL with a dry or damp cloth. However, the Halo SL does have an Ingress Protection Rating of IP67 when the battery door is sealed shut, meaning it is protected against submersion in water up to 1m deep for 30 minutes or any water projected from powerful jets against it from any direction. Always avoid getting anything inside the battery compartment (besides the battery, of course).

  • Can I open the Halo SL if it stops operating correctly?

No. Opening any part of the Halo SL besides the battery door will invalidate the warranty. If you have any product issues, please contact ILLUMAGEAR Support.

Product Benefits

  • Is the Halo brighter than standard headlamps?

Every headlamp is different, but a typical camping headlamp produces about 50-75 lumens while the Halo produces up to 202 lumens. For more information on how the Halo compares, watch this video:

  • Does the Halo offer any benefits over a headlamp?

The Halo is designed specifically to fit on a hard hat, light a worker’s entire task area without adjustment, and illuminate the worker in all directions.

  • Does the Halo offer any benefits over retroreflective gear?

The Halo actively illuminates the worker and is not dependent on a secondary source of light reflecting at the right angle. The Halo actually improves the value of reflective gear by casting light down on the wearer as well as other people nearby and reflecting that light out.

  • Does the Halo offer any benefits over area lighting?

The Halo is portable and personal, illuminating a worker’s task area without shadows regardless of where the worker moves, and at a fraction of the cost.

Manufacturing

  • Is the Halo SL made in America?

The Halo SL is designed and engineered in Seattle, Washington, USA, and manufactured in Indonesia.

  • Does the Halo SL contain any hazardous materials?

    No.
